Tyan Reveals New SMB Servers and Cache Appliance

Tyan unveiled a cache appliance powered by Intel's Xeon E5-2600 v2 processor and leveraging Intel solid state drives as well as Intel Cache Acceleration Software. Along with this announcement last week, Tyan also announced the addition of two new small and medium business servers to its SMB server portfolio.

At Computex 2014 in Taipei, Tyan announced the company's first Cache Appliance Solution based on a new server the company announced in February. The standard specs for the server are listed below but in the demo Tyan configured the server with (2) Intel Xeon Processor E5-2695 v2, 8 x 16GB DDR2 1600 GHz memory (128GB), and Intel's 400 GB SSD (DC P3700) running on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with Intel Cache Acceleration version 2.5 software.

Along with the appliance demo, Tyan also rolled out a large chunk of its existing catalog of server and motherboard products that it divides into four basic categories, High Performance Computing (HPC), Small and Medium Business (SMB), Embedded, and Cloud (mentioned above).

High Performance Computing systems are generally needed for mission or business critical high-end database, online transaction processing (OLTP), big data, and other applications that require large amounts of computing power. To manage the higher end workloads HPC servers benefit from co-processors that can take on some of the heavy lifting that would slow down the average processor. Tyan's portfolio in this area includes:

Tyan mentioned a few of its existing SMB and server room servers along with two new systems. Unfortunately, neither of the two new systems had much information included and neither the systems nor the data sheets have appeared on Tyan's website at this time.

Since many of the components are only slightly different from system to system in this group, the specifications are likely to be close to those of others in this group with some specialized modifications. For example, the TN65-B7053 was announced as a storage server due to its 16 HDD capacity. The GT56-B7066, however, appears to be a standard entry-level server.

Tyan has been in business since 1989 and has offices in the U.S., China and Taiwan. The company focuses on Intel and AMD x86 servers, server motherboards, and a few motherboards designed for embedded products such as digital signage, healthcare applications, gaming and other applications.

After reviewing Tyan's announcements and online material it was clear they are very excited about their products and take every opportunity to announce them. That can be a bit challenging when trying to separate what is new versus what existing product lines they are "showcasing" or "presenting." But, once the information was sifted it was also clear that Tyan is staying current and focused on cloud and HPC (big data), two of the most significant trends affecting businesses, but have not forgotten the SMB's and entry level business needs in the process.
